LG’s new AI model designs customized battery cell in a day

A newly developed artificial intelligence (AI) solution reduces the time needed for designing battery cells by almost 93%, according to the South Korea-based company LG Energy Solution.

LG Energy Solution said on Sunday that the new AI solution cuts battery cell design time from two weeks to just a day, ensuring an increase in work efficiency and an expected reduction in operating costs.

Battery cell design is a part of the initial stage of the battery production process. The generative AI solution, according to the company, will also help it quickly meet clients’ specifications for battery designs.

LG Energy Solution’s generative AI

According to the report in the South Korea-based Maeil Business Newspaper, the generative AI feature can quickly churn out the optimal cell design in under a day. All it needs is the capacity, energy density, resistance, and other performance conditions needed by the customer.

Once the information is fed to the AI recommendation model it takes under a day to come up with an optimal design. The design will have to be verified by human specialists before it can be used for the actual production.

This drastically shortens the previously long cell design process, which involved a number of back and forth situations between the designer team and the performance evaluation agents.

In the traditional approach, cell designing involved personnel making proposals for the structure and then checking whether it was able to meet the required output criteria, a process which roughly took two weeks.

LG Energy Solution has taught the generative AI on over 30 years of data related to cell designing and battery production.

According to the media reports, it was taught using over 100,000 cell designs that have been made by the company according to various customers’ needs and specifications.

The generative AI is, therefore, well-equipped to meet the fast-changing demands of customers and deliver upon them in a remarkably short period of time.

“The most significant advantage of this solution is its ability to maintain a consistent level of design quality and speed, irrespective of the designer’s experience,” a company official was quoted as saying in a report.

Future applications of the battery cell designing AI

With the advancement of electric vehicles (EVs) and the increasing need for batteries in all spheres of life, this innovation has come at the right time for the company. It can do wonders for the company and also for the market in general.

A report in The Korea Herald mentions that currently the AI model is in testing phase. However, LG Energy Solution is planning to integrate it in the in-house cell development system by October 2024 – i.e. within four months.

The AI can generate a design plan and also conduct performance verification within a day, which makes it all the more attractive.

“We will provide overwhelming product competitiveness and differentiated customer value by introducing AI technology to cell design that determines battery performance,” said Jinkyu Lee, chief digital officer (CDO) of LG Energy Solution, according to a report.

Moreover, LG Energy Solution also plans to apply the AI model beyond battery cell designing. The company is planning to use it to quickly design battery modules and pack designs.
