The 10 Best Fictional Planets & Moons, According To Ranker

The Star Wars universe imagines a world where planets are plenty and most of them are inhabitable. Even gas giants like Bespin have an oxygen-rich Life Zone layer that allows various forms of life to survive. Although there are many livable planets in the galaxy, they exhibit a vast variety of environments, from the lushest greenery to the harshest deserts.
There are a great deal of planets in the fictional universe, but only a few are mentioned or explored in detail in the movies, TV shows, video games, or other forms of canonical media. Everyone has their personal favorites, but fans have voted for a few planets as the best on Ranker.
10 Tatooine
Located in the Outer Rim Territories, Tatooine is a desert planet that is so dry that many of its inhabitants (including Luke, Uncle Owen, and Aunt Beru) have to farm moisture in order to survive. It’s also the first planet to ever be seen in the franchise.
Since it’s the home of two of the best ever Star Wars characters, Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker, Tatooine holds a special place in the hearts of franchise fans. Among its distinguishing features are its dual suns. There is never a dull moment in Tatooine either as it’s a hotbed for smugglers and raiders that has been featured in a great deal of Star Wars content.
9 Alderaan
The mountainous planet is once ruled by Queen Breha Organa and represented in the Galactic Senate by Senator Bail Organa. Sadly, it eventually gets destroyed when Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin tests the Death Star’s super laser on it.
Alderaan shines because it’s one of the most aesthetically pleasing planets in the universe. It is heaven for the galaxy’s wanderlust lovers as its surface has vasts bodies of water and green vegetation. But the best part about Alderaan is its own people, who consider themselves pacifists. Regrettably, their love for peace ends up not benefiting, as their planet becomes unfairly targeted and destroyed.
8 Yavin IV
During the Galactic Civil War, Yavin acts as the base of the resistance fighters looking to stop the Galactic Empire.
It is also one of the most iconic places in Star Wars history, as the space battle that results in the explosion of the first Death Star in A New Hope takes place here. The Battle of Yavin is such an important event in Star Wars lore that the timeline is typically defined by it, with fans measuring years in ABY and BBY, After the Battle of Yavin and Before the Battle of Yavin.
7 The Forest Moon Of Endor (IX3244-A)
IX3244-A is one of the 9 moons orbiting the largely uninhabitable gas giant, Endor. It’s home to the Ewok, Dulok, and Yuzzum species. Ewoks have consistently been a fan-favorite Star Wars species, which likely in part explains the popularity of the satellite.
Of course, beyond the beloved Ewoks, Endor’s moon is the location of one of the most important events in Star Wars history, as it was home to the decisive defeat of the Empire and destruction of the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. Understandably, it left a big impression on audiences.
6 Scarif
Since it’s far away from the prying eyes of the senate, Scarif is used by the Empire to house top-secret projects such as the Death Star’s battle station. Most officers are also reported to retire to the planet.
Scarif will always be remembered for being part of one of the tensest Star Wars scenes. It first appears in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and it is home to one of the most devastating attacks in history. One of its unique features is the planetary deflector shield, which acts as somewhat of a fence around the planet.
5 Ilum
Ilum is known for its kyber crystals, which Jedi younglings were required to extract as a rite of passage. It’s later occupied by the new Galactic Empire under Darth Sidious, who cause the trench along its equator to collapse after they fashion it into a new superweapon.
Ilum will also be special in Star Wars lore because its trench, otherwise known as Starkiller Base is the place where Han Solo dies. When it comes to climate, Illum is also on the extreme end. It’s the exact opposite of Tatooine because it’s entirely covered in ice and snow, making it similar to Antarctica.
4 Mandalore
Thanks to the Disney+ series, Mandalore has once again become a popular locale in Star Wars. It’s considered a cursed planet, hence its citizens are scattered all over the galaxy.
Though Mandalore is cursed, its natives are its greatest asset. Just like one of the best Star Wars parents, Din Djarin, they are all known to be competent bounty hunters and explorers. The woes of Mandalore are unfortunate, but the planet’s political instability has resulted in intriguing storylines in various forms of Star Wars media.
3 Coruscant
Also known as the Imperial Center, Coruscant is believed to be the original home of humanity. Moreover, its population is one of the largest, going into the trillions.
Coruscant is iconic because it serves as the capital of the galaxy for a long time. It’s very developed too, having better technology, education, and landmarks than most planets in the galaxy. Apart from its features, Coruscant is held dear by franchise fans because of the numerous developments that always take place in it. From periods of peace to military dictatorship under Palpatine, there’s never a boring day on the planet.
2 Kashyyyk
For a long time, Kashyyyk—the home of the Wookiee species—remains a colonized planet. It’s eventually liberated by forces led by Han Solo.
Kashyyyk is a planet guaranteed to leave scientists baffled since it has no axial tilt and a circular orbit, Consequently, there are no seasons. Due to the slavery storylines, it’s home to some of the saddest moments in the franchise. And thanks to the popularity of the Wookiee species, Kashyyyk gets at least a mention in most installments of Star Wars media.
1 Naboo
Located in the Mid Rim’s Chommell sector, Naboo is home to the Gungan species and the Naboo humans. Furthermore, it’s Palpatine’s rumored birthplace.
Naboo is characterized by beautiful architectural designs and an ambitious population, which makes it the perfect home planet for Palpatine. Most of the time, Palpatine is more concerned about the galaxy at large than his home planet, but Naboo still manages to survive thanks to its competent citizens.
