After decades in business, these 12 Vancouver restaurants are closing
Over the last few months, there has been an unfortunate increase in longstanding restaurants that have operated anywhere between 10 and 60 years closing in and around the city.
Whether it’s due to the owners’ retirement, the expiration of leases, or an increase in rent, these restaurants have all announced closures.
These are some of the saddest, longest-standing restaurants in and around Vancouver that have closed or will be closing soon.
Now closed
Wally’s Burgers Vancouver
Wally’s Burgers broke the news that it had closed the doors to its Vancouver location after 15 years.
“After so many great years, it’s time to say goodbye to our Vancouver location,” shared Wally’s. “This wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s time for some of our senior crew to retire and the younger crew to reset.”
This location opened in 2010, but Wally’s has been a burger staple in Vancouver for over 60 years, having opened its first location in 1959 on Kingsway. In 2008, the burger restaurant closed its Kingsway location, and in 2010, it relocated to its now-closed location in Killarney Center.
While its Vancouver location will be missed, folks still looking to get their Wally’s fix are in luck. Wally’s North Vancouver location in Cates Park will remain open and operating from May to September, weather permitting.

Ba Le Deli and Bakery Kingsway
Thomas Vu, co-owner of Ba Le Deli and Bakery, shared with Dished that it will be closing the doors of its flagship location at 701 Kingsway in Vancouver.
“Our flagship Ba Le Deli & Bakery location — serving the community for the past 37 years — is preparing to close its doors for the final time due to upcoming construction on the site,” shared Vu.
Ba Le got its start all the way back in 1987, after couple Hue and Trinh Le immigrated to Canada and opened the first Ba Le location in the city. Ever since then, the banh mi destination has gone on to open numerous locations throughout Metro Vancouver, serving guests delicious banh mi and coffee.
“This spot has been a Vancouver staple for generations, and while it’s a bittersweet moment, we’re grateful for the memories and support from our loyal customers over the years,” Vu added.
But don’t worry, Ba Le Deli’s many other locations throughout Metro Vancouver are still open.

Sal y Limon Kingsway
“From our humble start in 2012 with just 20 seats, to our 2014 expansion and the countless tacos, families, friendships, and margaritas since, this place has been more than a restaurant. It’s been home,” Sal y Limon shared,
Thankfully, the restaurant confirmed that they won’t be moving far.
“This isn’t goodbye, we’re moving down the street,” added Sal y Limon. “Same team, same menu, same hours — and the same heart, just a few blocks away.”
The new location will be found at 6196 Fraser St. and is expected to open sometime soon.

Take Five Cafe Granville
Submitted
“Since opening our doors in 2015, this cafe has been more than just a business; it has been a community. We owe our journey to the incredible support, kindness, and loyalty of all of you. Thank you for being a part of our story,” shared Take Five on a posted notice to its Granville location.
The cafe went on to say the reasoning for the closure was due to the expiration of its lease and franchise agreement, as well as the increasingly challenging economic environment.
However, Take Five did hint that something is in the works for the future.
“This goodbye does not mark the end of our story, but rather the closing of a chapter. As for what comes next? All we can say for now is, we believe that something wonderful is on the horizon,” concluded Take Five Cafe.

Sweet E’s Pastries and Sweets
Sweet E’s shared online that it closed its doors on June 15.
“Our lease is up and the new landlord is not renewing; sadly, we have to go,” said the bakery.
The bakery was run by sisters Eleanor, Theresa, and Kathleen Tsang, who grew up on the West Coast and created baked goods inspired by North American, European, and Asian traditions.
On the menu, you could find a variety of tarts, cookies, cakes, and pies.
“Kerrisdale has been Sweet E’s home since 2005. We’ve made so many friends, laughing and crying with you as we all weathered the ups and downs of the last 20 years,” added the bakery.

The Sea House Fish and Chips
Known to many as one of the best fish and chips spots in the city, Sea House broke the sad news on Facebook, adding that the reason for the closure was that the two owners were going into a well-earned retirement.
“Affectionately known by many loyal customers as ‘the two grandmothers,’ they’ve been the heart and soul of The Sea House Fish and Chips since 1997,” said Sea House. “For almost three decades, they’ve proudly served what many consider Vancouver’s best thin-battered fish, prawns, and calamari.”
However, folks still looking to get their hands on these fan-favourite fish and chips are in luck because Noople Noodle and Dumpling House, which is opening at the same location, is promising to serve the same fish and chips recipe.

The Boathouse Restaurant Kitsilano and White Rock
Shah Ghani, COO of The Boathouse, confirmed the news to Dished that The Goathouse Restaurant’s locations in Kitsilano and White Rock will be closing and added that the reason was the expiration of their leases.
“We are grateful for everyone that has made our time at these locations special, and are thankful to our dedicated employees for their hard work throughout the years,” added Ghani. “While it’s time to close this chapter, the spirit of The Boathouse lives on at our other nearby locations, where we remain committed to providing an exceptional experience for our guests.”
Both locations will close on September 21, 2025.
While the future of the White Rock location has yet to be determined, Hawksworth Restaurant Group is expected to open a new concept at the Kitsilano spot.
